Video basics

What is video editing and what belongs in a good edit?

Selection, structure, rhythm, sound, color and delivery without unnecessary complication.

Video editing is not just cutting footage. A good edit decides what the viewer sees, in what order, for how long and what feeling remains when the video ends.

Selection comes first

A large part of the work is simply watching the material properly. The useful shot is not always the most polished one. It may be a real reaction, a clear detail or a moment that can hold attention without being forced.

Structure before decoration

Before color, graphics or transitions, the video needs a beginning, a middle and a reason to end where it does. A promo must explain value quickly. An aftermovie must carry atmosphere. An interview needs a clean line of thought.

Rhythm is not the same as speed

More cuts do not automatically make a better edit. Rhythm comes from the relationship between image, speech, music, silence and shot length. Some material needs pressure. Some needs room.

What else belongs in the edit

  • sound cleanup and balance
  • music and precise timing
  • captions and simple graphics
  • color correction and shot matching
  • 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 versions
  • delivery for the platform where the video will actually live

The software matters, but the decisions matter more. That is why the goal, audience, duration and platform should be clear before the first cut. Read more on the Video Editing page.
