How to prepare footage for editing without losing time

A practical folder structure, a useful brief and a few checks that make every edit start faster.

Organized footage does not mean every file needs a perfect new name. It means the editor can quickly understand what exists, what matters and what cannot be missing.

Do not rename camera originals without a reason

The filenames created by a camera are often more useful than manually renaming hundreds of clips. Keep the original card structure and separate cameras, audio, graphics and other sources into clear folders.

A simple folder structure

  • VIDEO – camera A, camera B, drone and phone footage separated
  • AUDIO – recorder files, microphones and properly licensed music
  • GRAPHICS – logo, fonts, photos and existing visual assets
  • BRIEF – goal, platform, duration, deadline and references
  • EXPORT – only review and final versions

Write down what actually matters

A short note can save hours: who must appear, which statement carries the story, what cannot be published, the correct spelling of names and where the video will be used. If you have a style reference, send the link and explain which part of it matters.

Check the upload

Open a few files from different folders after the transfer is complete. Send one main link instead of a chain of temporary links and allow enough time for large material to upload fully. For a first conversation, a simple material list through the contact page is enough.
